See the words hiding in plain sight.

An anagram rearranges letters into a new word or phrase. Every original letter must appear the same number of times: LISTEN becomes SILENT, and GARDEN becomes DANGER.

Start with the vowels

Separate A, E, I, O and U from the consonants. With GARDEN, the vowels A and E can sit between consonant groups such as GR, ND and NG. Moving these small pieces around is often easier than staring at six unrelated letters. Remember that Y can do a vowel’s job too.

Look for familiar endings

Set aside likely endings such as -ED, -ER, -ING, -EST or -S. If your letters include T, I, N and G, test -ING before assuming those letters belong at the start. An ending is a hypothesis: put the letters back if the remainder does not form a word.

Choose the right search mode

Word finder finds shorter words as well as complete rearrangements. LISTEN can produce LIST, LINE and TIN. Exact anagrams uses every supplied letter once, including any repeated letters. Spaces are ignored, but results are single words; this tool does not generate multi-word phrases.

Make a missing letter work for you

Type a question mark for an unknown letter or a blank tile. QUI?K finds QUICK, with the C supplied by the blank. Up to two blanks are supported. A blank replaces one letter; it never represents an arbitrary sequence.

Use the filters with a purpose

If your puzzle gives a five-letter answer, select five letters. If a crossing gives the first letter, enter it in Starts with. Sort by longest first to find complete rearrangements, or A–Z to scan the possibilities alphabetically.
